Here! Here! Here! Ahh, the sounds of a full classroom, but these sounds may be changing. Although a full classroom is always a welcomed sight to an instructor, marking attendance is often viewed as a chore. We are all aware of the tight correlation be- tween attendance and academic success as well as our university's commitment to attendance, but it carves valuable instruction time out of our jam-packed class meetings. In addition, faculty members are challenged, ever increasingly, to add course rigor and, therefore, we are required to make more efficient use of class time. In an effort to maximize class time, I have piloted, with much success, an alternative, quicker way of collecting daily attendance data. In this brave new world, the technique I have begun to use is barcoding students for attendance. Using a barcode scanner and a program purchased from www.barcodeclass.com, I issue a barcode to each student on the first day of class, and they are asked to carry it with them all term. To take attendance, I simply scan their barcode during the class period, and the program records them as present. These data are easily exported to grading software, an important fact as many faculty use digital grade books. This method has proven to be efficient, easy to use, and enjoyable for students. The efficiency of this method is instantly evident. With a bit of upfront preparation to issue and print barcodes, daily attendance takes seconds. In addition, the accompanying software is simple to use, even to the most severe technophobe. Lastly, the students are amused by this method, creating in- genious techniques, such as affixing them to student identification cards and making barcode key chains, to store their barcodes. So, trade in your pencil for a scanner, and soon your attendance will be more streamlined, efficient, and much more fun. Soon, the sounds of attendance may change from here, here, here to beep, beep, beep...forever.
